Volunteer Trolley Operator Training

Become a Volunteer Trolley Operator

The Shore Line Trolley Museum relies on trained volunteer trolley operators to safely operate historic trolley cars. Operators also serve as guides, interacting with visitors and sharing the history of the trolley line.

Each winter, the museum offers a structured trolley operator training program for new volunteers who are interested in taking on this responsibility.

This is a serious, hands-on role that requires commitment, reliability, and a willingness to learn.

About the Training Program

Trolley operator training is designed to prepare volunteers for the safe operation of historic equipment used in museum service.

Training includes:

  • Classroom instruction
  • Hands-on learning with historic trolley cars
  • Mentoring alongside experienced operators

Because operating antique equipment requires focus, judgment, and consistency, not all trainees will ultimately qualify as operators.

Training typically begins in March.

Program Details

  • Volunteer-based training program
  • Class limited to 16 participants
  • $150 training fee due prior to the first session
  • Serious time and attendance commitment required

The training fee helps offset instructional materials and program costs.

Volunteer Application Required

Participation in the trolley operator training program requires completion of the museum’s volunteer application.

The first training session is an orientation. Completion of the volunteer application and orientation will be required to continue in the training program beyond the first session.

The volunteer application may be completed online or in person.

How to Get Started

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer trolley operator, the first step is to express interest.

Submitting an interest form begins a conversation and allows our training team to share additional details about orientation, the volunteer application, and the training process. Expressing interest does not guarantee acceptance into the training program. Space is limited, and participation requires orientation and completion of the volunteer application.

Other Ways to Volunteer

Not everyone who expresses interest in operator training ultimately becomes a trolley operator — and that’s okay.

The Shore Line Trolley Museum offers a variety of volunteer opportunities, including docents, visitor services, restoration and maintenance support, and other behind-the-scenes roles. Many volunteers find meaningful ways to contribute based on their interests, skills, and availability.

If operating isn’t the right fit, we’re happy to help you explore other ways to get involved.

Why This Matters

Volunteer trolley operators make it possible for the Shore Line Trolley Museum to operate safely, preserve historic equipment, and offer authentic visitor experiences. Without trained volunteer operators, the museum cannot run.

For those who complete the program, the experience is challenging, meaningful, and unlike anything else.
